Set within the historic gardens opposite Kingston Lacey House, this contemporary gallery fosters a dialogue between past and present, nature and art, and emotion.
The building adopts a starburst form – each spoke collectively forms a lobby, an artist studio and three viewing spaces. The gallery is clad in a local timber with a green roof. The inside however is deliberatly left bare to leave all attention to the art work.
Each gallery room pairs a piece from the Kingston Lacey collection with a contemporary work by street artist KAWS. This deliberate juxtaposition highlights the aesthetic and emotional contrasts between classical and modern forms of art. Further contrast is created between the human-made and nature through carefully framed garden views. Each room becomes a place of contemplation, where art and landscape work in unison to evoke emotion and encourage introspection.
The overall design does not dictate the experience but facilitates a conversation between the works, their context, and the viewer. It is a space where history, innovation, serenity, and provocation coexist.
